Anatomy Of The Knee Diagram

A pair of ligaments run on either side of the joint, forming the outer edges of the joint capsule – the medial and lateral collateral ligaments. These run along the inner and outer sides of the leg respectively.

A second pair of ligaments lie within the centre of the knee, the anterior and posterior cruciate ligaments. These stabilise the joint and prevent excess movement.

You can find further information on the ligaments and ligament injuries within our website.

The joint capsule contains two horseshoe shaped articular cartilages, the medial and lateral meniscus, collectively known as the menisci. These lie in the inner and outer side of the knee respectively.
